HISTORY

Cape May County was divided into three precincts in 1723. In 1745, Cape May Court House became the County seat. During the last few centuries, Indians, explorers, pirates, whalers, farmers, tourists and residents have all enjoyed the natural beauty of Cape May County's waters and the peninsula. The City of Cape May is a National Historic Landmark. It has over 600 wooden Victorian buildings dating from 1850 to 1910., It is the largest concentration of victorian buildings in the country. Cape May is also said to be the "Nation's Oldest Seashore Resort." Wildwood's Boardwalk was built at the turn of the century. The wooden walkway has become the historic heart of Cape May County. The Cape May Lighthouse in Cape May Point State Park was built in 1859 and is the second oldest continually operation lighthouse in the United States. The Cape May Light House Museum, is a maritime museum, offering visitors a panoramic view of the Jersey Cape.
